FLCCT Educational Programs
Why do people need financial education
classes? Financial education has
become a focus of both local and national efforts, as bankruptcy rates
are on the rise and people find themselves trapped in credit card debt.
For recent immigrants and unbanked communities, financial education is
the first step in learning about the banking system and setting the
foundation for families to build assets.
What does FLCCT offer?
The Financial Literacy Coalition of Central
Texas offers free financial education classes in English and Spanish to
community-based organizations in the Austin area. We can offer one
class on a particular topic, or a full series depending on the needs of
the organization. Who teaches the
classes? Volunteers teach the
classes. They are trained by coalition members and often have
significant work experience in the financial services arena.
Volunteers represent the Coalition and are not permitted to market any
products or services. The sessions are purely educational to
assist participants in understanding how to to better manage their
finances and plan for the future.
What curriculum is used? Adults: FLCCT uses
the FDIC Money Smart curriculum and All My Money, developed by the Illinois
Extension Services. Both curricula address financial management issues
ranging from saving and budgeting to managing bank accounts and credit. Both
of these curricula are taught in English and Spanish. If you have need for
other languages, please let us know, as we may be able to accommodate your
request. Youth: Welcome to the Real World, designed by the Illinois Extension
Service, or the High School Financial Planning Program of the National
Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) can be taught in English or in
Spanish. They focus on hands-on activities and bring to life how early
choices can impact long-term financial well-being and the process of
achieving financial goals. They are fun and interactive and leave students with a
solid basis for analyzing financial decisions.
