About the Financial
Literacy Coalition of Central Texas, Inc. (FLCCT)
The Financial Literacy
Coalition of Central Texas was officially formed in 2001. The
mission of the FLCCT is to foster community prosperity by enhancing the
knowledge and skills Central Texans need for improved financial
decision-making. The membership of the coalition represents the
public and private sector, including non-profit organizations, county
government, financial institutions, experienced financial education
consultants, certified financial planner practitioners, higher education
institutions, financial planning and investment advisory firms, and
retired school educators. The FLCCT recruits and trains volunteers
to provide sound money management education to adults and youth
throughout the Central Texas community. The coalition primarily
focuses on community, workplace, and youth education. The goal of
FLCCT is to educate. It is not a source for specific financial or
legal advice.
Vision
To be recognized as a trusted, unbiased,
and credible source of personal financial information.
Mission
To foster community prosperity by enhancing
the knowledge and skills Central Texans need for improved financial
decision-making.
History
The Financial Literacy Coalition of Central
Texas (FLCCT) was formed December, 2001, under the leadership of the
Texas Cooperative Extension of Travis County. Twelve community
leaders voted the FLCCT's first slate of officers and adopted its vision
statement: "To be recognized as a trusted, unbiased, and credible source
of personal financial information." To date we have taught over
3,500 Central Texans how to develop a household budget, control
excessive spending and debt, implement a savings and investment plan,
purchase a home, and send a child to
college.
Program Description
To accomplish our mission, we partner with
organizations or businesses who see in their clientele, members, or
staff the need for education about money management issues. The
FLCCT recruits and trains volunteer instructors to provide sound money
management education to adults and youth throughout Central Texas.
Financial Literacy Train-the-Trainer programs are conducted once or
twice a year. The program provides the volunteers with the tools
and resources to make their instruction experience a success.
The educational classes are delivered by
the trained volunteer instructors to individuals, community groups,
workplace employees, and youth groups through workshops, classes,
newsletters, and fairs. In these classes, the participants learn
to identify and prioritize their personal money management goals, track
their incomea dn spending to sty within a budget, comprehend the impact
of time on the value of money, understand the cost of using credit, and
protect their assets as they begin to accumulate money.
The FLCCT classes are free of charge, but
we ask for a commitment from partnering organizations, schools, and
businesses to make the classes a success. |
